Girl
Scouts from around Suffolk County gathered on
Saturday, May 8 for Girl Fest 2010 at Camp Edey in Bayport. It was the second time for
this event, the last one was held in 2008. The
Girl Scouts this year are supporting the
initiative of taking care of Mother Earth and
that was the theme of Girl Fest 2010.
The CEO of Suffolk County Girl Scouts, Yvonne
Grant said "Girl Fest is a way to celebrate us
going green and celebrate girls. It is a great
way for our scouts from different troops to
come together to have fun and learn from each
other. " And this is just what was
accomplished at Girl Fest 2010. Girl Scouts
that participated in the days events received
a "It's your planet, love it" pink and green
badge.
When the girls and their families arrived at
Camp Edey, they were greeted by music by from
WMJC Radio. They followed the different Girl
Fest trails around the grounds for all sorts
of fun and green activities. Vendors along the
trails had exhibits on saving the environment
and Girl Scout Troops had activities about
recycling everything from dyer lint to bottle
caps.
Of course there was plenty of arts and crafts,
games and face painting. But this jammed pack
day also had pirates, a re-fashion show,
martial arts demonstrations, paddle boating,
Latina American Dance Group and music by
Michelle Raitzin. The Girls Scouts of Suffolk
County Spirit Squad performed, as did The Girl
Scouts of Nassau County Chorus.
After the scouts presented the color guard
during the opening ceremony, Yvonne Grant
welcomed the everyone and spoke of their
pledge to respect the environment. State
Senator Brian Foley then present the Girl
Scouts of Suffolk County with a $200,000 grant
to make some of the building on Camp Edey more
energy efficient, which will help save on
energy bills and help the environment. State
Assemblyman Dean Murray presented the Girl
Scouts with a citation from Governor Patterson
and a proclamation signed by the entire New
York State Assembly.
Other dignitaries on hand supporting the Girl
Scouts were Congressman Steve Israel,
Assemblyman Steve Englebright, Assemblyman
Michael Fitzpatrick, a representative for
Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walters and
Suffolk County Legislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher.
Legislator Viloria-Fisher, a former Girl Scout
leader herself, got the crowd singing and
dancing with her own original "Merengue from
Mama Earth."
