It
was a picture perfect day for Bayport's
Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 31. Middle
Road was lined with boys waving American flags
and girls in red, white and blue dresses. Over
70 members of the Bayport Fire Department
started the parade at Connetquot Avenue,
ending at the Memorial Park. Bayport has a
long tradition of honoring those who serve.
Since the end of World War II, the fire
department has been sponsoring the parade.
This year's Committee Chairman was Fireman
Doug Lee.
Marching in full dress uniforms, the Bayport
Fire Department was accompanied with their
whole fleet of shiny red trucks. The Bayport
Ladies Auxiliary and Junior Fire Fighters
followed. Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts waved
flags and marched to the beat of the
Bayport-Blue Point High School Band along with
Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce and
Bayport Heritage Association.
At the Memorial Day ceremony, Pastor Ruth
Widman from Bayport Methodist Church said an
opening prayer and Pledge of Allegiance. Long
time resident and local historian, Stanley
Orenkewicz announced the laying of the
wreaths. There was complete silence and goose
bumps as "Taps" was played and the fire
department did a 21 gun salute in memory of
all the fallen soldiers from Bayport. Fireman
Jack Rhuel sang "God Bless America" and you
could hear the crowd singing along with him.
Bayport Fire Chief, Glen Bailargeon introduced
Bayport resident Scott McKendrick, a Navy
Master Chief who just returned from serving in
Iraq. Two of Bayport's bravest are in also in
the Armed Forces. Andy Maglione is currently
serving in the Air Force and Mike Zigrosser
will be a Navy Seal in September.
Chief Bailargeon commented on the parade and
ceremony. "It's always a great patriotic day.
This is one of many days that I am proud to be
the Chief of the Bayport Fire Department and
to be a part of our town. We all need to
support our troops, not just on this day, but
everyday."
