Irish
Eyes were sunny and smiling on March 21st, for
Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce 20th
Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. The
nor'easter of the weekend before postponed the
parade, but did not dampen the Irish spirit.
The parade this year honored The Bayport-Blue
Point Foundation, that has quietly and quickly
helped members the community in need for the
past 21 years. The Foundation donates every
penny it raises, so they are a totally
volunteer organization with no paid positions.
Their good work ranges from sponsoring high
school scholarships to helping pay bills for a
local family that has fallen on hard times.
Whenever a need arises - they are there to
lend a helping hand. The directors of The
Bayport-Blue Point Foundation were the Grand
Marshals - Mark Miller, John Casey and Jim
March. All three of these men have lived just
about their whole lives in Bayport, giving
countless hours to make The Foundation a
success.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the
parade, the Chamber sold special leprechaun
collector's pins. If you were photographed at
the parade with the pin, you were entered to
win a "Pot of Gold" filled with gift
certificates to local restaurants, stores and
a ticket to Bayport Fire Department's Big
Bucks.
The parade kicked off at 11:30am, but around
7am is when the tailgaters start to claim the
best spots along the parade route. The parade
began at Snedecor Avenue in Bayport and the
grand marshals led it down Montauk Highway to
Blue Point Avenue in Blue Point. It was a sea
of green with hundreds of people lining the
parade route on such an unusually warm day for
March. Everyone from babies to dogs were
sporting the color green.
This year's parade had a little bit of
everything that makes Bayport and Blue Point
such great places to live. Many local
businesses had floats and handed out green
beads, flowers, candy and tee shirts. There
were 13 pipe bands, dancers, twirlers, scouts,
motorcycles, classic cars, bicycles, horses,
boats and a plane. For the first time ever The
Long Island Ducks had a float with Quacker
Jack. The crowd loved to see them.
The St. Patrick's Day Parade gives everyone in
Bayport and Blue Point a chance to celebrate.
Many families have parties before and after
the parade. If you were not lucky enough to be
invited to one of these parties, the
restaurants and bars in the area had plenty of
free corned beef and cabbage.
Irish or not - The Bayport-Blue Point St.
Patrick's Day Parade is a special event that
brings the communities together to share in
some warm Irish spirit.
